Innovation: point-in-time access to Canadian statutes and regulations now available to the general public.
Montreal, Quebec, Canada - February 27, 2007 - The website for Canadian statutes and regulations, produced by the Montreal company Irosoft, is available online at laws.justice.gc.ca. This site is part of the Legislative Information Management System (LIMS) of the Department of Justice Canada.
"The new Justice Laws Website is a major innovation for the Department of Justice Canada," said Alain Lavoie, President of Irosoft, "since it is one of the first of its kind in the world, making federal legislation available at a given point-in-time, free to the public. We are very proud of having worked on this innovation, the result of many years of collaborating with the Department of Justice Canada."
This website will benefit lawyers, law students, those who work with legislative texts and even those Canadians with a general interest in the law.
For each given case, the law that applies to it is that which was in effect when the events occurred. Previously, people had to spend hours looking for the version of the applicable act in effect at the time of the events, and make sure that they had all the applicable amendments to it.
Since the Justice Laws Website went live in January, it has been possible with just a few clicks of a mouse to consult previous versions of a given act, dating back to January 1, 2003, and of a given regulation, dating back to March 22, 2006.
"People will now respect the truth of the saying, 'Ignorance of the law is no excuse,'" says Alain Lavoie.
About the LIMS System of the Department of Justice Canada
The website engine is the Legislative Information Management System (LIMS), a suite of computer software used for drafting, consolidating, managing and publishing the federal statutes and regulations.
LIMS allows for quick consolidation of the statutes and regulations, offers an advanced search application and provides access to English and French versions of Canadian statutes and regulations at a given point in time.
Similar systems have been designed for the justice departments in Quebec and New Brunswick.
